At the Venta or hostelry of the Mulinillo, which is situate on theconfines of the renowned plain of Alcudia, and on the road fromCastile to Andalusia, two striplings met by chance on one of thehottest days of summer...Exemplary Novels is a series of twelve novellas that follow the modelestablished in Italy, written by Miguel de Cervantes between 1590 and1612. The collection was printed in Madrid in 1613 by Juan de laCuesta, and received well in the wake of the first part of DonQuixote. The novellas are usually grouped into two series: those characterizedby an idealized nature and those of a realistic nature. Thoseidealized in nature, which are the closest to the Italian models, arecharacterized by plots dealing with amorous entanglements, byimprobable plots, by the presence of idealized characters andpsychological development, and the low reflection of reality.Therealistic in nature cater to the descriptions of realistic charactersand environments, with intentional criticism in many cases.
