In this book Juan J. Pérez-Santonja and José Hervás have brought together a group of specialists to synthesise our current knowledge of microbial keratitis. Ten years ago clinical trials of the recently introduced, topical broad spectrum, quinolone antibiotics showed that quinolone monotherapy was effective treatment for most cases of bacterial keratitis. As a result, there has been a trend to empirical treatment of keratitis and a loss of focus on the continuing and newly emerging problems associated with this disease. This book provides a thorough overview of the current state of the wide and evolving world of microbial keratitis. There are two introductory chapters focusing on basic principles and new diagnostic tools. In the following chapters bacterial, fungal, Acanthamoeba, and Microsporidia keratitis are reviewed in depth, with practical information and proper management. Viral corneal infections are also covered extensively, with up-to-date information on the latest developments in treatment. The last chapter concerning "strategies for the management of microbial keratitis" is very useful, with practical and safe recommendations in the management of microbial keratitis. We have reviewed some of the areas where research into microbial keratitis is needed. This book will show readers where we are now in the understanding of microbial keratitis and will stimulate them to contribute to our knowledge of the disease.
