Desde el Grupo de Trabajo sobre Historia de la Ingeniería Mecánica yde las Máquinas y Mecanismos (HiM3) en el seno de la AsociaciónEspañola de Ingeniería Mecánica(AEIM), uno de los objetivos es llevar a cabo una serie depublicaciones, que contribuyan al conocimiento y reconocimiento de lahistoria de nuestra profesión.Este reto fue recogido con entusiasmo por la Universidad de Jaén, através de su Departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica y Minera y de su UJAEditorial. El primer fruto de esta idea es este libro que tenéis antevosotros, primero de la serie, dedicado a algunas de las Figurasilustres de la Ingeniería Mecánica en España. La obra del científico,a pesar de su incidencia en el desarrollo social, no tienefrecuentementeel reconocimiento que merece y es aún más patente en cuanto a la labor del mente ingeniero, que hace posible un continuo crecimiento delnivel de vida de la humanidad poniendo a su alcance las tecnologías ylos medios materiales que cubran sus necesidades. Evidentemente, elhecho de que sean estos y no otros ingenieros en este primer volumen,no responde a ningún orden de importancia ni de olvido de tantosingenieros cuyas aportaciones fueron fundamentales para el desarrollode la ingeniería mecánica, que pretendemos ir recogiendo en futuraspublicaciones.From the Working Group on the History of Mechanical Engineering andMachines and Mechanisms (HiM3), which belongs to the SpanishAssociation of Mechanical Engineering (AEIM), one of our aims is toconduct a series of publications which will contribute to theunderstanding and recognition of the history of our profession. TheUniversity of Jaén (UJA) eagerly took up this challenge through itsDepartment of Mechanical and Mining Engineering and UJA Editorial. The first outcome of that idea is the book you have before you, the first in the series, dedicated to some of the Luminaries in MechanicalEngineering in Spain. The scientist?s work, despite its impact in thedevelopment of society, does not usually get the acknowledgement itdeserves. This is even more evident regarding the work of engineers,who decisively contribute to the improvement of the constant growth of the standards of living of humanity by making the technologies andmaterial resources that people need accessible for all. Clearly, thefact that this first volume features these engineers and not othershas nothing to do with varying degrees of importance, or with theneglect of so many engineers whose contributions were paramount forthe development of mechanical engineering. Indeed, we intend tofeature those in future publications.
